A historic milestone in 2026

This year, 2026, marks the centenary of Antoni Gaudí's death and a particularly significant milestone in the history of the Sagrada Família. On February 2026, the Tower of Jesus Christ, the central and tallest tower of the Basilica, was culminated with the installation of the upper arm of its cross. The tower has reached its final height of 172.5 metres, the highest point of the temple.

The three-dimensional cross that crowns the tower is 17 metres high and 13.5 metres wide. Its final piece, the upper arm, was installed in February 2026, completing the exterior of the central tower. Work on the interior of the tower will continue in the coming years.

This milestone coincides with the 100th anniversary of Gaudí's death, making 2026 a particularly meaningful year to visit the Basilica and discover his architectural legacy. On June 2026, the Tower of Jesus Christ was officially blessed during a solemn ceremony commemorating the centenary of Gaudí's death and was illuminated for the first time.

The Sagrada Família is Antoni Gaudí's best-known work and has become an undisputed symbol of Barcelona. This unique modern temple has been under construction since 1882 and continues to evolve according to Gaudí's original vision.

The foundation stone of this colossal basilica was laid in 1882. Although the architect Francesc de Paula Villar was initially commissioned to carry out the Sagrada Família's project, a year later he was replaced by the young Gaudí, who devoted himself entirely to the task until his death in 1926. During his lifetime, Gaudí completed the crypt and the Nativity façade, which was later declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The surviving models and drawings have made it possible to continue the building work funded by private donations. Since December 8, 2021, the Tower of the Virgin Mary of the Basilica of the Sagrada Família has been crowned with a star that lights up every night, illuminating the Barcelona skyline.
